Public Safety


  • Enhanced 911 emergency telephone services are available throughout Sheridan County . Enhancements include addressing and location identification for caller, including cellular phones.
  • Hazardous Materials responses are provide by Sheridan Fire-Rescue with one Haz-Mat response vehicle and Haz-Mat Technician level personnel.
  • Fire insurance ISO classifications.
    • City of Sheridan has a classification of 5
    • Areas outside of the City of Sheridan , within 5 miles of the fire-rescue station and within a 1000 ft of a fire hydrant have a classification of 5.
    • All other areas of Sheridan County , not within a Fire District, have a classification of 9.

Sheridan County is served by an enhanced 911 system and well-trained, responsive law enforcement, fire and rescue teams, providing response services to:

Fire-Rescue:

Sheridan Fire-Rescue Department provides professional full-time Fire, Life Safety and Emergency Medical Services. Fire protection is provided by the City of Sheridan Fire-Rescue Department with full-time personnel, as well as six (6) volunteer fire departments throughout the county, including volunteer-manned fire trucks located on isolated farms and ranches to assist with wildland fire suppression in those isolated rural areas. Big Horn, Clearmont, Dayton , Ranchester, Story and the rural areas are services by well-trained volunteer units. The departments have mutual aid and response agreements for:
  • Automatic structure response within fire districts
  • Mutual aid response for wildland fires
  • Advanced life support ambulance response to all of Sheridan County and southern Montana


Law Enforcement:

Law Enforcement services are provided by the City of Sheridan Police Department and the Sheridan County Sheriff's Department, as well as the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
